Go-cart is an open wheel car ,having a small skeleton body but with the specifications of an actual car. Unlike any other motor vehicles, it has some major components as well as some special specifications, which makes it unique from the other cars. The go-kart created by Team Automaestro had the following specs:

VEHICLE SPECIFICATION:

  1. The go-kart  weight is maximum upto 240 kg with driver.
  2. Wheel Base-56 inches
  3. Track width –
    • 38 inches (front)
    • 40 inches (rear)

STEERING SYSTEM:

Streering system, being the only mechanism to control the direction while moving  a go-kart, consists of the following specs:

  • Mechanical Linkage Steering
  • Ackerman Mechanism
  • Turning Radius-2.032m
  • Steering Angle-45 Degrees

The steering system was designed skillfully to ensure it had the smallest feasible turning radius and it had best usability for the driver.

The inner and outer steering angle was 42.8° and 31.2 ° with caster and camber angle of 5° and 0 °.The Kingpin inclination was 0°.

The steering system of a go-kart can be compared with the spine of a body. Just like a spine controls the whole body movement, similarly the steering system controls the direction of a go-kart.

CHASSIS MATERIAL:

Chassis, more like the skeleton of a go-kart, is the main frame of it. The chassis houses all the major parts of the go-kart like engine, suspensions, steering system, driver cockpit. The go-kart had the follow specs:

  • 201 Annealed SS, Dimension-1.75 inch outer, Diameter 2 mm thickness tube
  • Yield Strength-292 MPa

The chassis weighed up to 50 kg. It was made light weight to avoid extra weight as well as to create maximum traction.

The material was selected because of its –

  • High strength
  • Availability
  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Weldability

WHEEL AND TIRE:

Wheels and tires are the main components of a go-kart which makes direct contact with the road surface .The particular wheels are chosen keeping in mind that maximum amount of traction needs to be created . It needs to be made sure that the wheels do not skid or slip while turning the go-kart.

Brand: BKT Brand

Dimension:

  • Front -10*4.5-5
  • Rear-11*7.1-5

BRAKING SYSTEM:

The braking system is the one and only thing for the driver which provides the ultimate safety to a driver. The system was made to – take least amount of time to stop the running car.

  • Type: Hydraulic Disc Brake
  • Disc Diameter:200 mm
  • Stopping Distance:7.6 m
  • Braking force:4024.316 N
  • Braking distance:7.6 m

BUMPER:

Bumper is a part of the aerodynamics system which is designed to create extra traction on the go-kart. We had considered the use Jute/Glass fibered reinforced composite for the bumper in our go-kart.

Material: Jute/Glass Fiber

Reinforced Composite

Thickness: 5 mm

Front Bumper

Rear Bumper

Many renowned automobile manufacturers are showing interest for natural fiber reinforced composites for its distinctive advantages. Such as:

  • Light weight
  • Sufficient mechanical strength
  • Good thermal & sound insulation properties
  • Low carbon-footprint in manufacturing process
  • Environmental friendliness

POWER TRAIN:

The heart of the Go-kart, AKA the power train, supplies the main driving power to the vehicle. It consists of –

  • Engine transmission unit
  • Chain sprocket
  • Axle shaft

The engine transmission unit and the chain sprocket was selected upon certain criterions. Where as the axle shaft was designed on the criterions of-

  1. With standing expected loadings
  2. Fatigue Safety
  3. Cost
  4. material availability.

The power train unit consisted the following specs:

  • Engine: Bajaj Pulsar 150 cc
  • Power:14.9 Bhp @9000 rpm
  • Transmission:5 speed(manual)
  • Top speed-45 kmph
  • Fuel Consumption-35 kmpl
