In its upcoming vehicles starting this year, Volvo will start rolling out the new Ride Pilot system. Unlike Tesla’s Autopilot system, Volvo promises its Ride Pilot to be a fully hands-free, attention-free autonomous driving system.

The system is expected to be of SAE Level 3, and will feature 8 cameras, 5 radars, 16 ultrasonic sensors and an Iris LiDAR sensor. With Ride Pilot activated, the system will take full responsibility for operating the vehicle, without the need for driver supervision.

Tests are currently underway on Swedish roads, and Volvo plans to begin intensive testing on the roads of California this year. Volvo also plans to launch the system to customers in California with its upcoming electric SUV, where the Ride Pilot system will be available as an add-on subscription to car owners.
